![]() ![]() Her sister considered it her worst quality.Īmaya looks away again. Perhaps it’s a topic better left unbreeched. Her eyes glance away, and her lip dimples as if she’s biting it from the inside.įor a moment, Janai feels as though she shouldn’t ask, that perhaps she should drop the topic completely and they can go dine together in the great hall of Lux Aurea or spar outside where the sun can shine down on them. They told me it was a great honor to receive one.”Īmaya nods her fist. It hits her in a flash, and she moves to replicate the motion. She can’t remember the signs the other elf had used to describe it. Name signs.”Īmaya’s hands twist together in lieu of a response. Janai’s fingers tap together like a little beak. Her hands find each other, holding on for a moment before she responds. She takes note when the general’s expression shifts and her hands still for just a little too long.Īmaya’s smile looks strained. Her hands aren’t used to doing the talking-they stutter like lips, and more than once she has to push her mistakes away and start again-but her eyes watch. Her job was to watch the breach, to watch the human general as the general watched her back (she never did get over the fire in those eyes), and Janai thinks she’s still, to an extent, doing just that. I like the character, it is something new, I really liked the John Wick, mute assassin, since it was a new form of communication being tried in a action movie.Janai isn’t a fool. However, someone who is deaf, commanding an army, and maybe not be able to know what is going around you can be hazardous, but again this is a fantasy world. Helen Keller was blind, and deaf, and was able, with a lot of work, to get around somewhat on her own. Better than people who can see, which made it believable. Toph was blind, but there have been people who did amazing things when they are blind. For example, the character in John Wick 2, was a mute assassin, and I assumed Amaya was the same. Having to have someone tell you, through lip reading, or sign language tends to slow down the process. Since you can possibly command an army as a mute, but need to have the ability to hear what is going on around in a given moment. Honestly, when I saw the character I thought she was mute not deaf. Gren automatically begins interpreting since she could no longer see Viren's lips. On the surface, it might seem that it was sort of a power move in response to Rayla's irreverence, but really it was because Amaya needs to see Rayla's lips.Īt Sarai's grave, Amaya begins to walk away from Viren, who continues to talk. When Amaya had Rayla prisoner, Rayla began to look away, but Amaya grabs her chin and says "Don't look away from me". This kind of thing is a common way to get someone's attention in the Deaf community. When Callum knocked on the shield on Amaya's back to get her attention (rather than speaking). In the lodge's hallway, when Callum loudly referred to all Amaya's HUMAN TROOPS to warn Rayla, Amaya says "Callum, you know it doesn't help to yell", referring to her understanding his speech. One of my favorite things about TDP's representation of Amaya's Deafness is the attention to little details. ![]() Think you've been wrongfully banned from our Discord server and want to prove it?
